William Hesmer and the Columbus Crew are looking good in their bid to repeat as Major League Soccer champions. The Crew leads the MLS with 49 points and a 13-5-10 record as the season winds down.
Meanwhile, Wilson native Hesmer, a Hunt High and Wake Forest University graduate, is still ranked among the top MLS goalkeepers. The 27-year-old is ranked third in the league with a 0.94 goals against average. Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports in his "Crew Review" this is the first time Hesmer's GAA has dipped below 1.00.
Hesmer has seven shutouts, tied for fourth-best in MLS, but he has played significantly less minutes (1,620) than other goalkeeping stat leaders due to an early season back injury.

Hesmer asked back to U.S. Men's National Team training camp
This time, it's got to be for real for William Hesmer.
The MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew goalkeeper was invited to the U.S. Men's Soccer National Team training camp for the second time this month. Hesmer, who everyone should know by now is a Wilson native and Hunt High graduate, participated in training camp earlier this month but did not make the roster for the United States' international friendly match with Sweden on
Saturday.
This time Hesmer is one of 20 players summoned by U.S. head coach Bob Bradley back to The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., for nine days of training before the team departs for Columbus, Ohio, where it will take on Mexico on Feb. 11. That game, the United States' first match of the final round of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will be broadcast on ESPN2.
I know this is an important match but I'd love to see William get his shot at playing for the U.S. team, especially since the game's in Columbus. Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch, who made the roster for the Sweden game but didn't play, is also back in camp.

Hesmer joins a short list
When Will Hesmer takes the field in goal for the Columbus Crew in Sunday's MLS Cup final against the New York Red Bulls in Carson, Calif., he will join a very short list of area athletes to participate in a professional sports championship game.
Hesmer was the 1999 Wilson Daily Times Athlete of the Year as a senior at Hunt High School before going on to a standout career at Wake Forest University.
Without having done extensive research, I can think of four athletes who hail from the WDT readership area who played in a pro sports championship. Most notably are former Southern Nash High School star Julius Peppers and SouthWest Edgecombe product Yancey Thigpen. Peppers was a defensive stalwart for the Carolina Panthers in their 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII while Thigpen started at wide receiver and caught a touchdown pass for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their 27-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX.
Former Hunt High School multi-sport star Octavus Barnes was a member of the Atlanta Falcons when they lost Super Bowl XXXIII to the Denver Broncos. I don't remember Barnes, who lettered in football and basketball at the University of North Carolina, getting into the game or if he was even on the active roster. He only played two years in the NFL.
Former Fike High School standout Glenn Bass was part of two American Football League championship teams with the Buffalo Bills in 1965 and 1966.
Then there was Red Barrett who pitched in the 1948 World Series for the Boston Braves against the Cleveland Indians. Barrett was not a Wilson native but lived here for many years and raised a family here.
If there are any other athletes from the Wilson area who played in a pro sports championship game, please give me a shout because I would love to know who they are.

Hesmer, Crew rolling along
Don't look now but William Hesmer is ranked among the top goalkeepers in Major League Soccer.
Hesmer, a Wilson native and Hunt High School graduate, has the third-best goals-against average with a 1.15 and has recorded nine shutouts for the Columbus Crew. The Crew, by the way, has easily clinched a berth in the MLS Cup playoffs with a league-high 53 points.
The Crew, which clinched the Eastern Conference championship with a 1-0 defeat of the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, needs three points in their final five matches to secure the MLS Supporters Shield. The Shield goes to the MLS team with the best regular-season record.
Good luck to William and the Crew as they begin their MLS Cup quest.

Hesmer holding his own in MLS
Time to check on Will Hesmer, the goalkeeper for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.
A former Wilson Daily Times Athlete of the Year, Hesmer is tied for third among 15 MLS goalkeepers with at least 300 minutes played with a goals-against per-game average of 1.20. The league leader is the Chicago Fire's Jon Busch with a miniscule 0.67.
Hesmer has recorded three shutouts in 11 games and made 40 saves on 52 shots. This is his third season in the MLS and second with the Crew, but first as a full-time starter.
The Crew was cruising but have run into a mini-slump. Saturday night's 2-0 loss to San Jose was the second straight for Columbus, which is tied with Chicago for second place in the Eastern Division. With 23 points, New England holds a four-point lead on the Crew and the Fire.
Big games loom this week for Columbus, which visits Chicago on Tuesday and on Saturday is the guest of the Kansas City Wizards, Hesmer's former team. Then on Saturday, June 21, the Crew travels to Los Angeles to take on the Galaxy and David Beckham. Then back to Ohio for a meeting with Western Division leader Colorado on June 28.

Hesmer can stop shots but can he blog?
As promised, I've got some more stuff on Wilson native William Hesmer, the starting goalkeeper for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.
This comes from William himself as he produced a blog on the Crew's Web site during preseason camp.
I'm impressed. If the soccer thing doesn't work out, there might be a future for William with the written word.

Hesmer, Crew open with shutout
The Columbus Crew kicked off their Major League Soccer season with a 2-0 defeat of Toronto FC and Wilson native William Hesmer was in goal for the shutout.
The Crew held a 1-0 lead when Hesmer punched away a penalty kick in the 44th minute and defender Adam Moffat booted it away.
Moffat scored the first goal for Columbus, also the first goal of the MLS season.
Hesmer, a Hunt High School graduate, was invited to the U.S. National Men's Team training camp in January but was not selected to play in either of the international friendly matches the U.S. played prior to Olympic qualifying.
I'll try to keep up with Will as much as possible here this season, so stay tuned.

Winslow, Wilkerson part of first RailHawks Women roster
The Carolina RailHawks, a professional soccer club based in Cary, have announced plans for a women's team this spring. The roster will consist of players with college, W-League and National team experience and two of them have very local ties.
Sarah Winslow, a sophomore at Wake Forest University and a 2006 Fike High School graduate, and Allie Wilkerson, a senior at Barton College, are part of the 20-woman roster.
Wilkerson is the only non-NCAA Division I player on the team, which also includes such prominent names as Casey Nogueira of North Carolina, Kelly Attayek of UNC Greensboro and Molly Baird of Tennessee.
The RailHawks begin the season May 10 in Greensboro against the Carolina Dynamo and will play their home opener at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m.
The Carolina RailHawks Football Club plays in the United Soccer League First Division, which will have 11 men's teams this spring. The RailHawks Women will play in the USL W-League which will have 41 teams this spring, including the Greensboro-based Dynamo and the Charlotte Lady Eagles.

Hesmer not on U.S. men's roster
William Hesmer will have to wait for his chance to play for his country.
The 26-year-old professional soccer player was not part of the 22-man roster for the U.S. Men's National team's game against Mexico on Wednesday night in Houston.
Hesmer, a Hunt High School and Wake Forest University graduate, recently participated in training camp for the national team. Hesmer, a four-year Major League Soccer veteran, is coming off his first season with the Columbus Crew. He will now head to preseason camp with the Crew and hopefully get another chance to play for the national team.
