The pursuit of Beddingfield High junior basketball player Aaron Rountree is beginning to heat up.
The 6-foot-7 wing for will hold a workout at the school Tuesday with coaches from N.C. State, Virginia, Elon and Virginia Commonwealth present, Bruins head coach Jeremy Howard said. Rountree is a talent-in-progress but certainly showed a lot of it this past season when he averaged 10.1 points and 8.8 rebounds.
Rountree was an integral performer on a talented Beddingfield that might just be the team to beat in not only the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference but also the 2-A Eastern region as well next year. Returning with Rountree are fellow Wilson Times All-Area selections 6-7 junior X-Keem Jones and junior playmaker Daquan Langston.
Expected a lot of attention focused on Rountree and the Bruins next winter.

Rocky Mount, Kinston finish the jobs
Congratulations to boys basketball teams from Rocky Mount and Kinston which won N.C. High School Athletic Association championships on Saturday.
The Gryphons defeated Concord 84-79 in the 3-A final in the Smith Center in Chapel Hill while Kinston pounded West Caldwell 51-29 in Raleigh's Reynolds Coliseum. It was Rocky Mount's fourth NCHSAA title and first since 1982 when George McClain led the Gryphons to the 4-A crown. Kinston (28-4) won its second state championship in three years, having won the 2008 3-A title, and seventh NCHSAA crown overall.
Interesting, Beddingfield handed Rocky Mount one of its three losses (the others came to Fike and Nash Central) and came within a basket of beating Kinston during their Eastern Plains Conference regular-season meeting in Wilson. Of course, the Vikings won that one and three others against the Bruins, who also lost to the Gryphons once.
Goldsboro, the remaining third of eastern basketball royalty, lost the 1-A final to Monroe 62-46 but it was still a great season for the Cougars under first-year head coach Patrick Reynell, who had been the assistant boys coach at Charles B. Aycock for a number of years.

Jeffers impresses at GSK
Greenfield School senior Jeremy Jeffers earned the attention and respect of noted high school basketball observer Bob Gibbons at the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational at Raleigh Broughton High this week, reports Tim Stevens of the News & Observer.
Jeffers, who has signed with Drake University, averaged 15 points per game in the GSK, in which the Knights went 1-2.
Stevens quotes Gibbons as saying, "He is a guy that a lot of teams missed on. (Drake head coach and former N.C. State assistant) Mark Phelps came back into his old stomping grounds and has got an outstanding player."

Richardson, Jeffers earn McDonald's All-America team nominations
Greenfield School seniors Brian Richardson and Jeremy Jeffers were named as nominees to the prestigious McDonald's All-America high school boys basketball team, Knights head coach Rob Salter reported Tuesday morning.
Richardson, who has signed with the University of South Carolina, and Drake University signee Jeffers become the third and fourth players in Greenfield hoops history to achievement a McD's nomination. Last year, Brian McNair, now a freshman at Gardner-Webb University, was selected while Anthony Atkinson was the first. Atkinson, you may recall, led Barton College to the NCAA Division II championship in 2007 and is now a member of the Harlem Globetrotters.
Neither McNair nor Atkinson made the final cut of the McD's roster but just to be nominated is a big deal so congratulations are in order for Richardson and Jeffers!

Reynell takes Goldsboro boys basketball job
Just a word of congratulations to Patrick Reynell, who is leaving Charles B. Aycock to become the new varsity boys basketball coach at Goldsboro High.
Reynell has served as David West's assistant at CBA for the last five seasons. Goldsboro and CBA have had a good rivalry for a long time, especially on the basketball court and now it should be a lot friendlier.
Certainly Reynell will have a lot to work with at Goldsboro which won the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference last season and is now in the 1-A Carolina Conference, having taken North Johnston's place.
I will miss Patrick calling in CBA game reports, which he was as apt to do as West, who I'm sure will miss his trusted assistant.
Reynell's wife, Carrie, will remain at Aycock where she coaches the varsity girls basketball team and is a softball assistant coach, having played that at Barton College. They are the proud parents of an 8-month-old little girl.

Richardson to South Carolina
Greenfield School senior Brian Richardson has given his verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina, making him the second Wilson basketball standout to become a Gamecock. Jamie Watson, who thrilled Fike fans in the 1990s, also played at South Carolina before a brief NBA tour of duty with the Utah Jazz.
Richardson and Knights teammate Jeremy Jeffers, who committed to Drake University last week, will be able to sign letters of intent during the early signing period from Nov. 11-18.
Two more Greenfield seniors, Darian Cahill and Jarred Hinton, are also expected to sign basketball scholarship offers but neither has made a decision.

On the recruiting trail, I have word from Greenfield boys basketball head coach that 6-foot-6 senior Jeremy Jeffers has given a verbal commitment to Drake University.

Report: Atkinson signs with Louisburg
I was told today by a reliable source that Jeremy Atkinson will not sign a basketball scholarship offer from Barton College but has signed to play with Louisburg College.
Atkinson, who scored 2,001 points during his Fike career, told me a week ago he was planning to sign with NCAA Division II Barton but apparently has changed his mind in favor of Louisburg of the National Junior College Athletic Association ranks. I guess he's hoping to land a Div. I scholarship in two years.
Look for Tom Ham to have a story on this as well as a story on all the changes in the Fike athletic department this summer.

Richardson playing in NBA Top 100 Camp
Brian Richardson, a rising senior at Greenfield School, is in Charlottesville, Va., this week to participate in the prestigious NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp.
The camp, observing its 12th summer at the University of Virginia, counts many NBA stars among its alumni, including Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic.
All the top players in the class of 2010, including Kinston's Reggie Bullock; Harrison Barnes of Ames, Iowa; Will Barton of Baltimore and Brandon Knight of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In short, this puts Richardson among the cream of the nation's crop in the 2010 recruiting class.
Greenfield head coach Rob Salter told me Richardson is being heavily pursued by Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, Alabama and Xavier, among others.

Report: Northern Guilford to lose 3-A boys basketball title
The Greensboro News and Recorded reported Wednesday that Northern Guilford has been stripped of its 3-A boys basketball title by the N.C. High School Athletic Association for using ineligible players.
Northern Guilford, in its second year, defeated defending state king Kinston in the 3-A East Regional final before outlasting Gastonia Forestview in the state championship in March.
The story alleges that two students on the Hawks roster were not in the school district. Additionally, the varsity baseball and wrestling team have been charged with using ineligible players.
News and Record staff writer Robert Bell also reported the NCHSAA is investigating other Guilford County schools as well.
This is nothing new in high school sports but it makes you wonder sometimes who is really attending the school to which they are assigned.

Greenfield pair invited to elite Carolina Challenge showcase
Greenfield's Brian Richardson and Jeremy Jeffers have been invited to Dave Telep's Carolina Challenge, one of the top high school basketball showcases in the state.
The Knights duo are part of 80 invited players to the one-day academy, to be held March 28 at Cary Academy. In short, these are the best freshmen, sophmores and juniors in North Carolina.
Telep, if you don't know, is considered one of the top college basketball recruiting gurus.
It's good to see Richardson and Jeffers get the nod which is the first step in what should be huge senior seasons for these talented players, both of whom have attracted several NCAA Division I offers.

McD's All-Americans are out. Where's Wall?
The 2009 McDonald's High School Boys Basketball All-American teams were announced Wednesday and there were two players from North Carolina: Mason Plumlee, a 6-foot-11 post player from Arden Christ School, near Asheville, and Raleigh Ravenscroft's 6-10 center Ryan Kelly.
The one thing Plumlee and Kelly have in common, besides having signed with Duke University, is they have both played against Greenfield this season and won.
Omitted from the 24 players on the East and West rosters is another player who has beaten Greenfield (and who could sign with Duke), Raleigh Word of God point guard John Wall. Apparently Wall is not eligible to be in the Mickey D's starfest because he reclassified, ie, repeated a grade, when he came to Word of God from Raleigh Broughton.
Wall will participate in the Jordan Brand Classic in New York's Madison Square Garden on April 18.

Fike to honor '84 state champs Friday
The 1983-84 Fike High School boys basketball team (they're not boys anymore!) will be honored during halftime of the Fike boys home game against Rocky Mount. The '84 team remains Fike's (and Wilson's) only state champion. The Golden Demons were coached by Harvey Reid Jr. who had won state titles at Frederick Douglass and Elm City before coming to Fike with merger in 1978-79.
The reunion has been put together by Charles Howard, now an assistant coach at Barton College after coaching the varsity boys for six years at Beddingfield, where he still teaches.
That Fike team was pretty remarkable as no player was taller than 6-foot-3 and down the stretch Reid played his starters almost exclusively. Only one player went on to an NCAA Division I career, 6-2 sophomore John McNeil who played at Pittsburgh.
(Correction: McNeil signed with Pittsburgh but never played for the Panthers. Instead, McNeil played at Chowan College (then a junior college) and Elizabeth City State, where he graduated. Howard, who signed with Belmont Abbey College out of Fike, ended up playing at N.C A&T State University, becoming the only player from the 1984 Demons to play Div. I basketball.)
I've found lot of great photos from that season and will put them on a photo gallery to go along with a retrospective on that team which will run this weekend. So if you like short-shorts, check it out!

B-Mc a McD nominee
Greenfield varsity boys basketball head coach Rob Salter called earlier this week to say Knights senior guard Brian McNair has been named as a McDonald's All-America nominee.
McNair is the second player in Greenfield history to earn such a distinction, following Anthony Atkinson who was a nominee in his senior season of 2002-03.
McNair, known affectionately as "B-Mc," has signed to play with Gardner-Webb University next season. The Knights tip off their season at home tonight against Waccamaw.

Greenfield basketball drawing some big-time attention
Some interesting news comes out of Greenfield where basketball season is just around the corner. The talented cast under head coach Rob Salter has attracted the attention of many college coaches, including Virginia's Dave Leitao, who was in Wilson last week. His target? Knights junior 6-foot-6 wing Brian Richardson, who was offered a scholarship, Salter told me today.
Richardson been contacted by several top-level programs and a host of mid-major teams but, Salter said, probably won't decide until after the season.

Wooten new Cougars head coach
Tom Wooten will be the new boys basketball head coach at SouthWest Edgecombe, as confirmed today by SWE athletic director Sandra Langley.
Wooten, a 1980 graduate of SouthWest served as the assistant coach for his predecessor Dudley Etheridge, who stepped down at the end of last season.

Demons downshift right out of a home playoff game
I was excited about the prospect of the Fike-SouthWest Edgecombe 3-A NEW 6 Conference varsity boys basketball tournament semifinal Wednesday at Fike.
After all these teams had each won on the other's courts during the season and were part of a four-way tie — with Rocky Mount and Nash Central — for first place in the regular season. Plus, each team boasted an exciting lead performer in Fike junior Jeremy Atkinson and SWE senior Eugene Jenkins which almost assured an explosive meeting.
But the first quarter saw the Cougars struggle to an 18-9 deficit. At least the Golden Demons were doing their part, especially guard A.J. Hines who nailed a trio of 3-pointers. Fike had four 3-balls in the quarter.
Then in the second, the Demons became deliberate, almost looking like they were in a slowdown. Naturally, the Cougars chipped away at the lead until they caught them late in the third quarter. By then, Fike's offense had devolved into what it had done during a midseason losing skid — standing around and waiting for Atkinson to do something.
"They just stood around. We didn’t play ball like we played all year," said a clearly disappointed Demons head coach George Drawhorn. "Just walked the ball down the floor. I guess it’s just one of those games.
"I kept changing point guards and saying push the ball but sometimes that’s all you can do as a coach. We just got outplayed tonight and, in the playoffs, instead of playing at home, we’re going on the road."
Drawhorn was right. The Demons forfeited a chance at the NEW 6's top seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs and lost the No. 2 seed outright. Now they must face Nash Central, a 74-71 loser to Rocky Mount in Wednesday's first semifinal, at 4:30 p.m. Friday for the conference's No. 3 seed.
Gone is the first-, and possibly second-round home playoff game for Fike. Now its first-round foe will be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed.
"Third (seed), you go to (Oxford) Webb or four, you go to Greensboro Dudley — so pick your poison," Drawhorn said.

Lady Bruins holding steady at No. 1
Tuesday brings the latest high school basketball polls from NCPreps.com and the Beddingfield girls are still unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the 3-A poll.
The Lady Bruins are 18-0 and have held at least a portion of the top spot since the polls began earlier this month.
In a related note, the Rocky Mount girls (14-1) have climbed into the No. 9 spot in the 3-A poll.
No other teams in The Wilson Daily Times readership area or in conferences that have area members are in the polls, boys or girls.

Brittani Billups, Eastern Wayne's excellent post player, is No. 2 statewide with a 25.3 average, trailing only Williamston's Katie Paschal (25.7). Billups is third in rebounds with a 14.5 average.
Beddingfield junior Monique Spry is tied for ninth in the state at 6.7 assists per game.

Also to be found on NCPreps.com are statistics for girls and boys basketball. In the girls scoring leaders, SouthWest Edgecombe's Monique Williams leads the area at 20.1 points per game, good for No. 12 among reported girls averages in all classifications.
Brittani Billups, Eastern Wayne's excellent post player, is No. 2 statewide with a 25.3 average, trailing only Williamston's Katie Paschal (25.7). Billups is third in rebounds with a 14.5 average.
Beddingfield junior Monique Spry is tied for ninth in the state at 6.7 assists per game.

Knights slip in NCISAA 1-A poll
Greenfield slipped ever so slightly in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A boys basketball rankings this week.
The Knights dipped to No. 4 after splitting a pair of games, including a 62-59 loss to highly regarded School Sport Australia’s traveling 18-under team.
Greenfield remains the highest ranked 1-A Coastal Plains Independents Conference squad as Wayne Country Day at No. 8 is the only other CPIC team in the top 10.
The top-ranked Raleigh Word of God Holy Rams are unbeaten after 16 games, including the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament title last month. Word of God’s next game is against Ravenscroft, ranked No. 4 in the NCISAA 3-A poll.
