The latest NCPreps.com high school basketball polls are out and Charles B. Aycock is listed ninth in the 3-A boys rankings.
That's quite a feat for the Golden Falcons, who at 13-1 have reeled off 12 straight victories after losing to Hunt in their second game. It was just a few years ago that Aycock endured a winless season and now David West has the Falcons among the best 3-A teams in the state.
Aycock has a deep team but two Falcons are attracting the attention of a lot of collegiate recruiters. Brandon Winford, a 6-foot-7 junior, has been contacted by many major NCAA Division I programs such as N.C. State and Georgetown while senior Isaac Ryals has some Div. I suitors as well as many Div. II schools in the region.
Aycock is the only team in The Wilson Times readership area that is ranked but Kinston is the No. 1 2-A boys team while Rocky Mount is fifth in the 3-A boys poll.

East-West rosters a little disappointing outside of football
The North Carolina Coaches Association e-mailed me the boys and girls basketball rosters for the East-West All-Star Games over the weekend.
That means the only roster I've yet to see is girls soccer for the mid-summer extravaganza to be played in Greensboro in the third week of July.
The Wilson Times readership area is well-represented in football with SouthWest Edgecombe's Raymond Cobb as the East head coach of a staff that includes Southern Nash's Brian Foster and Greene Central's Kenneth Grantham. Furthermore, there are five area players on the East roster — Fike's Rashad Parker, Southern Nash's T.J. Batchelor, SouthWest Edgecombe's Marquis Hines, Greene Central's DaRon Tripp and Beddingfield's Jumal Rolle.
That's a generous, but well-deserved, representation for our area for the football game, scheduled July 22 in Grimsley High School's Jamieson Stadium. However, I'm a little disappointed that no players from this area made the basketball or soccer teams.

Inaugural Coach D Classic a hit
A new tradition was started at Fike on Thursday evening in the form of the Coach D Classic, an exhibition basketball tournament honoring outgoing Fike boys basketball coach George Drawhorn.
Drawhorn is retiring in a few weeks after 19 years as the Golden Demons head coach, the longest tenure of any of the school's boys basketball coaches. For that matter, 19 years is probably the longest anyone has been the coach of one sport at any Wilson County high school since the 1978-79 merger. So this is a great way to honor an outstanding coach and teacher who has impacted so many lives here in Wilson.
The proceeds of the Coach D Classic, I am told by Charles Howard, will go towards establishing a scholarship fund in Coach Drawhorn's name. The event was dreamed up by Christopher Barnes, a marketing teacher at Fike. The tournament was a round-robin with teams from Wilson's three high schools participating and the crowd support, Charles said, was "fantastic."
Fike beat Hunt in the first game but the Warriors took out their frustrations on Beddingfield in the second game. Finally, the Bruins got revenge by defeating Fike in the final game. Beddingfield was awarded the championship by virtue of the highest point total and assistant principal Marquis Spell was named Classic MVP.
But wasn't Spell a former multi-sport star at Hunt, leading the 1989 Warriors to the state 4-A baseball championship series (which they almost won)? And Howard was a star on the '84 Fike state championship basketball team? Hmmmm....
Anyway, here's a shot of the victorious team and congratulations to the Bruins for winning not only the inaugural Coach D Classic but also claiming the unofficial old school Wilson County championship!

Greenfield gym a busy place this week
Greenfield boys basketball head coach Rob Salter let me know the school has had many guests this week as a parade of college basketball head coaches and assistant coaches have stopped by.
Of course, the Knights boast a pair of major Division I recruits in Brian Richardson and Jeremy Jeffers but Jarred Hinton and Darian Cahill are getting their fair share of attention as well.
Head coaches from Marquette, Bucknell, Auburn, South Carolina, High Point and Winthrop have dropped in while assistant coaches from Maryland, Michigan, Alabama, Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina, Auburn, UNC-Greensboro, Elon, UNC-Wilmington, Arizona State and Xavier have paid visits.
Wow!

East outshined in NCHSAA finals this year
Only two teams from the East won N.C. High School Athletic Association basketball championships Saturday and both of those — the Greensboro Dudley girls and Northern Guilford boys in 3-A — aren't really from the eastern part of the state.
I still wonder why teams from Guilford County are in the 3-A eastern region and I think the real answer is that there are no 3-A teams in Wake County and hardly any in Cumberland County. You go from Wilson and Harnett County all the way to Asheboro and Burlington before you run into another 3-A school.

NCHSAA releases championship pairings
The N.C. High School Athletic Association has released the pairings for its girls and boys basketball championships this weekend. For the first time since 2004, there are no teams from The Wilson Daily Times coverage area playing for a title.
This year two schools — Kernersville Bishop McGuiness in 1-A and Gastonia Forestview in 3-A — are playing for the boys and girls titles.

NCHSAA basketball playoff pairings *UPDATED, 2:33 p.m.*
As of very early Saturday morning, here is what I know will be the pairings for next week's N.C. High School Athletic Association basketball playoffs (barring some last-minute bracket-shifting by the NCHSAA).
The boys start play Monday at 7 p.m. The second round will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the sectional finals will be Friday at 7 p.m.
The Fike boys, who lost their No. 2 seed from the 3-A NEW 6 Conference with Rocky Mount's tournament championship win, will be the NEW 6 No. 3 seed and visit Southern Wayne, No. 2 from the Eastern Carolina Conference. If the Golden Demons win, they will most likely have to go to Hertford County on Wednesday. (*UPDATE* Fike would probably play Bertie in the second round
The Beddingfield boys, No. 3 from the ECC, visit Jacksonville, No. 1 from the Mideastern Conference. A Bruins' win would likely send them to South Central — or at home against Hunt! — in the second round. Unless Hunt gets a wild-card bid, the Warriors' season is over. *UPDATE* Saturday, 2:27 p.m.

ECC champion Beddingfield will host a wild-card opponent on Tuesday but it's unclear who the Lady Bruins will host in the second round. Southern Nash shoots for the cure tonight
Southern Nash will sponsor a "Coaches vs. Cancer" night this evening in the varsity girls and boys basketball doubleheader against Rocky Mount. All proceeds will benefit American Cancer Society.
The Ladybirds and Firebirds will wear home jerseys that have been sponsored by families in honor of or memory of loved ones who have had cancer. Each jersey will bear the name of the person honored or memorialized.
"Shooting for the Cure" T-shirts will be worn by students, staff and parents who attend the games.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle with that money going to ACS as well.
Sounds like a great idea so please head over to Stanhope tonight and support them.

Poll time again
NCPreps.com released its weekly North Carolina high school basketball rankings on Monday so these might be outdated by now. For one, the No. 1 team in the 3-A boys poll, Kinston, lost at Beddingfield on Tuesday.
Beddingfield didn't lose this week but dropped another spot to No. 8 in the 3-A girls rankings.
I see Fike got a few votes in the 3-A boys poll. I'm wondering where are the votes for North Johnston in both 1-A polls. The Panthers and Lady Panthers sport identical 12-5 overall marks and are both perfect through five 1-A Carolina Conference games.

Lady Bruins slide to 7th in NCPreps.com 3-A poll
Beddingfield dropped two spots to No. 7 in the last 3-A girls basketball poll conducted by NCPreps.com. The Lady Bruins (13-3) lost to Fike last Monday night, giving them two straight losses to the Lady Golden Demons this season. Beddingfield's other loss came in overtime at Rocky Mount early in the season.

Warm up with high school hoops polls and stats
The latest NCPreps.com state high school basketball polls are out and Beddingfield inched up from sixth back to fifth, the spot in which the Lady Bruins debuted in the 3-A girls poll.
The rankings were released Monday (I know, I know, I'm three days late) so they clearly don't take into account Beddingfield's second loss to Fike on Monday night. The Lady Golden Demons are still getting no love from the voters as they are unranked and received zero votes.
South Central is atop the 3-A girls poll while (big surprise) Kinston continues to rule the 3-A boys rankings.

I guess you could say Fike senior Jeremy Atkinson "made the list" since he's second in the state in scoring with a 27.1 average (again these stats were released prior to Fike's consecutive games against Beddingfield and Hunt on Monday and Tuesday).
However, those numbers are only good through eight games. On Fike's Maxpreps.com team site, Atkinson's updated scoring average is 24.4 which is still pretty ding-dang good and among the best in the state.
On the girls side, Beddingfield junior Casey Elliott is listed third in assists through 13 of the Lady Bruins' 15 games.
SouthWest Edgecombe junior Ny'Neka Euwell is fifth in rebounding with an 11.8 average but the Lady Cougars' Maxpreps.com site has her at 12 rebounds per game.
Ny'Neka is the younger sister of Linwan Euwell, a University of North Carolina football player and the 2007 WDT Athlete of the Year. Keep an eye on her.
By the way, thanks to Fike varsity head coaches George Drawhorn and John Gay, SouthWest Edgecombe's Sandra Langley as well as the other coaches in the area who put their boys and girls stats online. It sure does make my job a lot easier and helps to publicize their teams. I wish all the coaches would use this free feature.

High school basketball polls released
The first basketball rankings for N.C. high school teams have been released by NCPreps.com and Beddingfield debuted at No. 5 in the 3-A girls poll.
The Lady Bruins collected 42 votes in the list released last week. South Central, which lost to Beddingfield in the 3-A Eastern Regional final last March, is No. 1 with 7 of 8 first-place votes while Hickory is second and defending champion Concord is third with Western Harnett coming in fourth.
With Tuesday's 57-50 loss in the Eastern Carolina Classic holiday tournament, I expect Beddingfield to dip in the next poll, which will be out either Monday or Tuesday. The question is, will Fike be ranked now?
In the 3-A boys poll, Kinston is ranked No. 1. No surprise there. The Vikings are the favorites to repeat as state champions. But what is surprising is Charles B. The 33rd (31st for girls) Eastern Carolina Classic holiday basketball tournament concluded Tuesday night with a first, at least in my four-plus years at The Wilson Daily Times — a loss to a county rival by the Beddingfield girls.
The Lady Bruins were denied their fifth straight Classic title by Fike as the Lady Golden Demons won 57-50 to push their tournament-record championship total to 17. It was a sweet night for Fike as sensational senior Jeremy Atkinson led the Golden Demons to a 92-59 pounding of Hunt in the boys championship.
Atkinson finally won the Harvey Reid Jr. Memorial Award for boys MVP while Fike sophomore Leslie Finch (who won a national Punt, Pass and Kick championship three years ago) was saluted as the Eddie Summerlin Memorial Award recipient as the girls MVP.
Beddingfield thumped Greene Central 68-48 in the boys consolation meaning neither Greene Central team won a game this year. I wonder how many times that's happened.
Looks like the tournament came close to drawing 3,000 spectators based on my very unofficial estimate.

Second night of Classic is always fun
Maybe it's because the gym is usually a little less crowded but the middle night of the Eastern Carolina Classic holiday high school basketball tournament always seems more fun. Monday night at Fike for the 33rd Classic (31st for girls) certainly fit the bill.
I didn't get there in time to see Hunt beat Greene Central 42-25 in the girls consolation game but the boys semifinals matchup between Hunt and Beddingfield was well worth putting off my desk work for an hour or so. The Warriors went on an 18-0 spree in the third quarter to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit and turned the game into a tense, back-and-forth affair in the fourth quarter.
Play was sloppy at times, the officiating was lax at times and the decision-making was, well, horrible at times. But the game was pretty much as good as it gets in high school basketball. Fike's packed, sweaty gym reverberated with fans' reactions to the players' intensity. The kids were working so hard, knowing that a big play in front of a big Classic crowd was worth 10 times more than one during just about any other game.
Adding to the atmosphere was a battle between the cheerleaders as during many timeouts, one or two members of each squad would hit the floor for a series of somersaults that made me queasy just watching them spin. The Hunt cheerleaders clearly dominated here and they made sure their Beddingfield counterparts knew it.
It seems the Classic is back on good footing after a poor turnout at Hunt last year. The Wilson Daily Times (that's us) reported tickets sold through the first two nights in 2007 numbered around 1,300. Fike athletic director John Gay told me Monday night that around 1,162 were sold at Saturday's opening round and about 775 more for Monday's two games. Considering Fike's gym seats considerably less than Hunt's facility, that made for a great environment and I'm sure Tuesday will be as good, if not better.

Friends try to console Terrell Winstead, whose potential game-tying jumper was just short in the Bruins' 60-58 loss. Don't fret, Terrell, you'll get at least two more shots at the Warriors this season.

Classic off to a non-surprising start

All the favorites won as the Beddingfield girls continued their recent domination with a 56-44 defeat of Hunt; the Fike girls continued their recent solid play with a 58-23 humbling of Greene Central and the Fike boys more or less cakewalked over winless Greene Central 73-42.
The best game of the tournament comes Monday night when the Hunt and Beddingfield boys tangle for the right to play Fike for the tourney crown. Both teams are contenders for the No. 2 spot in the 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference. I say No. 2 spot because I don't see anyone beating reigning conference and state champion Kinston, whose junior star Reggie Bullock was in Chapel Hill on Sunday night taking in the UNC-Rutgers game.
But back to the Classic, it continues to draw a big crowd, although the Fike gym limits the number of spectators that Hunt or Beddingfield see in the years they host. I still say the best place to play it is where it all began — Wilson Gymnasium on the Barton College campus. But that will not happen unless Barton offers its gym for free and, like I said, that will not happen.

GSK field includes Rocky Mount and Kinston this year
The Eastern Carolina Classic isn't the only holiday tournament going on in the area. The Nash County Christmas Tournament begins today at Nash Central while the Edgecombe County Christmas Classic will be played Saturday and Monday. The Johnston County North-South Christmas Tournament is scheduled to tip off Monday.
The biggest holiday basketball tournament is in Raleigh with the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational which runs from Friday to Tuesday at Broughton High School. Two teams that are well-known in these parts — Kinston and Rocky Mount — are in this year's boys tournament.

The Eastern Carolina Classic tips off Saturday
It's almost Christmas and that means holiday high school basketball tournaments. Naturally, the Eastern Carolina Classic is the granddaddy of them all, now in its 32nd year for the boys tournament and 30th year for the girls.
I'll have a lot of stuff here on the blog during the tournament, including photos from Fike High School. In addition, I'll have previews for the girls and boys tournaments in the print and online editions of The Wilson Daily Times this week.
The action begins Saturday at 5 p.m. with the Hunt-Beddingfield girls game.

6 p.m. — Girls consolation game
7:30 p.m. — Hunt vs. Beddingfield (BOYS)

5 p.m. — Boys consolation game
6:30 p.m. — Girls championship
8 p.m. — Boys championship
If you plan to go, make sure you get there early because Fike's gym is, well, 50 years old and not that big and there is sure to be a large crowd each night. Also, metal detectors will be in place at the gates so dress warmly because you may have to stand in line if you get there late.
Admission is $7 for each day.
